As the saying goes opinions are like air holes everybody has one, (thought I would be rated G LOL)
I will step outside the box and look at this question as a consumer and a business.
As a consumer if I was at an establishment I liked and noticed they were offering me the chance to get something instantly like a discount, free food or something sent to my phone by opting in and subscribing to a VIP Text Club and get exclusive specials sent to me on occasion I would happily do so.
Now if I started receiving too many text from that company and the offers had no value I would be more inclined to opt out, which is one of the neat things about mobile text marketing, if customers want out they can get out.
As a business owner you want to try and avoid that from happening which is why it is important to be creative with your campaigns. So looking at this from a business owner’s perspective I would not hesitate to start a mobile text marketing campaign. It may take some time to build up your opt in subscribers but the value in those customers are an incredible asset for your company.
Just like anything else, you get out of something what you put into it.
You hear all this chatter going on about mobile text marketing and you go on goggle and do some searches and you are pounced on with all these ads and links and think geez, there must be something about this mobile text marketing thing let me look into this.
So you fill out a few forms, maybe make a few phone calls and decide why not let’s give this a shot.
What you do next is the beginning of success or failure, being intrusive or not. Just like any industry you have your good and your bad. To help weed out a few, if they want to charge a set up fee just strike them off your list, it is not necessary.
You want to make sure you have some experience behind the scenes, if you get set up with a company that just opens the play room and throws you in without concern over your safety then you are more likely to get hurt and your experience will be tainted. Plus you may end up with a few less customers because you became intrusive.
What business are you in?
Let’s say you are in Real Estate and you put a short code and keyword on a sign so prospects can text in to get additional information on the property. Then you decide to get access to those cell numbers and start sending additional messages. Just because they texted in for more information does not mean they were agreeing to subscribe into an opt in database for further text messages sent to their mobile phone. That could be intrusive and also viewed as spamming.
Now if you use the response message to give them the requested additional information on the property you could also put a link to a website on the property and on the website have a opt in sign up form that allows the prospect the ability to opt in a subscription based campaign for text communications from your company.
Let’s say you are a private school or daycare facility. You could give parents the chance to opt in so they could receive alerts and announcements. As a parent that would be a wonderful option for communications and being intrusive with this example would be hard to do!
I could obviously go on and on with examples but by now you get the point. So really the answer to the question is yes and no. If the providers that offer mobile text marketing would advise their clients on mobile text marketing and give guidance and also not allow a business to set up intrusive campaigns then mobile text marketing would not be seen as intrusive but welcomed.
Just think as a business owner how important your customers are and use mobile text marketing as a way to build an intimate relationship with them and put yourself in their shoes and think if you were the customer would you like what you were sending them.
